Motivation Speech for Anyone

The problem with motivational feel-good content is that it gets you hyped up while you’re consuming it, but then sh*t hits the fan in real life and you don’t feel like working on your goals anymore.

So how do you find motivation intrinsically and get to work on your goals?!

This is a motivation speech for anyone, to help you achieve your goals no matter what they are.

Let’s dive in.

I recently read Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. Everybody loves this book. He worked his a** off and it got me SO motivated.

But then guess what?

I put the book down and I just kept doing what I always do.

That’s the huge disconnect we all face. We load up on yummy, sugary, calorie-dense inspirational fodder and then just sit on it — instead of expending the information we consume productively.

So how do you actually get sh*t done?

Make Moments Happen NOW

The other day, I was thinking about how cool it would be to own a house in Utah. Then I thought, one day it would be so cool if I could have a house in California, too. I’m so grateful and blessed to already live in Austin and have a great house, but it dawned on me…

When?

When am I going to have that?

I want to change my life, I want to do all this crazy, extreme sh*t — sometimes I think it’s so extreme that I can’t do anything about it — but why can’t I?

It’s probably a lot simpler than I think it is.

Buying the house in Utah or the house in California isn’t about the money or whether I can afford it or not — it’s about the fact that these are the moments of our life and we need to start doing something about them NOW.

It’s about making a choice and realizing that these moments don’t come back.

This Noah who’s writing this post is already going to be gone by the time you’re reading this article, so you have to look at yourself in the mirror now and ask yourself, are you living this moment how you want to be living your life?

If you want to get a cool house, if you hate your f*cking job, if you want to get out of your relationship, if you want to move to Texas — whatever it is — make these moments happen NOW because you don’t know if you’ll have the chance to do it later.

And yes, we can be inspired artificially or superficially — whatever it takes to make it happen — but it’s actually making it happen that counts.

It’s not about the rah-rah bullshit.

It’s about realizing that the moments of your life matter.

An asteroid might be coming, so do something about it.

Have The Courage to Make It Happen

Sometimes I think about why we’re SO scared to do all of these things.

Why are we so scared to ask for money in business? So scared to approach someone to say we like them? So scared to actually put ourselves out there online?

What are we ACTUALLY so afraid of?

Really, all you should ever be afraid of is an asteroid coming and blowing up the earth before you have a chance to make all your dreams happen. Before you get in the best shape of your life. Before you quit your job and go traveling. Before you date the person of your dreams.

And so how do we get more courage? More confidence? More self-worth?

I think how we start making some of these things happen is twofold…

Get a Dream

I was thinking about this with work — what’s my vision of the future? And also for my relationship with my future wife and kids — do I have a vision for that?

I basically have a vision for dinner today, and that’s as far as I’ve gotten.

Which is okay, too. There’s nothing wrong with that. I’m not here to yell at you, punish you, or say hustle harder.

I’m just saying, think about what kind of vision you would be excited to live.

YOU are the author of the story that you get to live. You get to make up all the moments that create an amazing story. And it’s YOUR story — there’s no wrong or right way to craft it. Whatever story you want to create, you get to write it.

And guess what?

It’s an action story. You’re living it, too.

Start With Baby Steps

After you have an idea of what your dreams are that would make your life exciting, how do you start making tiny steps towards making that stuff happen?

Because once you have the dream and you’re inspired by it, the easy part is done. Sustaining the motivation to see it through is the hard part, and it’s what we’re focusing on today.

So, how can you commit to the Law of 100 or commit to doing ONE thing each day that moves you a little bit closer to your dream? Just one tiny-a** thing every single day.

Maybe it’s the James Clear way and you need to create a 1% habit. Maybe it’s the David Goggins way and you have to go extreme. Maybe it’s the Gary Vee way and you have to be yelled at.

I don’t give a sh*t what it takes for it to work for you. The point is to commit yourself to something small and actionable every single day in whatever area actually matters to you.

Be Okay With Making Decisions for YOU

I was talking with Pat Flynn recently and I asked him, “Why do you wear a beard?”

And he said, “It’s not for you, it’s for me. It’s my beard. and I think that’s the beauty of life.

It’s not about getting everyone else to accept us. It’s about getting ourselves to accept us, first.

One thing I think is important to remember on this “asteroids only” journey, is that nothing matters besides the moments of our own lives. So let’s go make the most of them and do the things we want to do, whether or not anyone else is looking.

And so for yourself, what are you doing when no one else is looking? What are you excited to be doing when no one else is looking, and how do you embrace more of that in your daily life?

If you like marketing, go deeper into that. If you like reading all day and you’re like, “Man, can I just get paid to read books somehow? There’s a lot of people that make money doing that.

You can live whatever dream life you want. You just have to decide on the dream life, and then go take action to make those things happen every single day.

What To Do When Things Get Bad

The other day, I failed my flying exam. And I was really disappointed in myself. I had no one else to blame but me. It was the first time I felt significant, public failure because my friends knew about it, my mom knew about it, and I was supposed to go to Pluckers and have wings with my friends after the test because I was going to pass it.

And I think two things are really important at that moment…

The first is that failure is a test of conviction.

If you fail, it’s a way of the Earth or God or whatever you believe in saying, do you want this? You can have it… But do you really want it?

The second thing is… change the channel.

When I’m sitting in my sh*t, having a pity party (invitation one only), thinking poor Noah, it sucks to be Noah…

Shut the fu*k up. Change the channel.

You don’t have to sit in your misery.

Key Takeaways

There’s a lot that we’ve talked about here, but really at the end of the day, whatever it is that sparks your motivation is great. But don’t just consume it without taking action afterward.

Get clear on where you actually want to go and focus on getting beyond the stop/start part. Don’t just find a way to do something for 30 days — find a way to sustain it for 100 days, or even a lifetime. Really commit to the dream life you want to live, commit to it NOW not later, have the courage to do the things you want to do, and be okay with it if other people don’t get it.

Don’t put off your dreams until an asteroid comes and wipes out the planet and you can’t make them happen anymore. Try making them happen now. They’re probably closer in reach than you think.
