Week 1

Week 1: Quant Based Marketing

A year ago, I was scootering around India.

I was trying to get back to my friend Susan’s place.

It was dark, late and I only had a vague idea of where I had to go.

It took me 45 minutes to get back.

Susan and me on the scooter in Goa, India 🙂 Check out that beard!

The next day, I looked up where my destination was and planned the route to get home.

Guess how long it took this time? 15 minutes.

3x faster just knowing where I wanted to go and planning it out.

Marketing is exactly the same.

Know where you want to go and work backwards to figure out the best way to get there.

To market something is essentially three things:

The WOW formula!

1- What problem are you solving?

2- Who is the customer for that problem?

3- Where are they?

That’s it. Nothing else matters. Queue Metallica.

Chances are that, at one point or another, you’ve been in a meeting related to customers, profit, or advertising without ever talking about WHAT problem you are solving, WHO the customer is, or WHERE the customer is.

(Summer of Marketing focuses primarily on WHO and WHERE, but if you’re interested in an intense course about how to come up with ideas and validate them, check out Monthly1k.com.)

Each week, I’m going to share a fun, short story and give you 1 actionable marketing task.

If you commit to doing the work, you will get the results you want.

This week we are going to help you plan out where you exactly want to be and the ways you think you can best get there over the next 12 weeks.

Week 1 Task

1) Your Destination:

What 1 specific objective do you want to accomplish in 12 weeks?

Most people say 2 goals. Don’t
Most people aren’t specific. Don’t
Most people think too little about this. Don’t

Pick 1 exact thing you want to accomplish in 12 weeks (1000 email signups, 10,000 visitors to my blog, sell $500 of my product, etc)

Once you’ve completed this task, leave a comment here with where you want to be in 12 weeks. Go comment here now.

2) Your Route to Get There

Create your own Quant Based Marketing spreadsheet to hit the goal you figured out in #1

Here’s the exact Quant Based sheet I created at Mint that helped us get to 100,000 registered users within 1 month of launch.

Any time I launch a new product or business, I use a spreadsheet EXACTLY like this to plan my marketing. Over the course of the next 12 weeks, you’ll get better at fine tuning your QBM sheet.

If you’re new to marketing don’t be thrown by the word “Quant”. Just think “Number Based Marketing”. The entire idea (and the veterans out there know this) is to work backwards to the solution. Just like my scooter ride in India.

View and Download on Google Drive OR  Download it as Excel file here.

A) Write in your specific weekly goal for the next 12 weeks.

B) List out ALL the possible activities you can do to hit your goal.
Don’t hold back, write down everything. Once you’ve come up with every possible idea use this free PDF of the top 10 Major Marketing Channels to give you MORE ideas.

C) Write down the result you think you’ll get from each activity towards your goal.

D) The key thing is to make sure your totals for each action add up to your target goal

Here’s an example of someone trying to get 500 visitors:

Starting a blog: Traffic = 100 visitors
Write a Guest post: Traffic = 200 visitors
Reach out to influencers on Twitter: = 25 visitors
Post on LinkedIn Groups = 175 visitors

Total ========> 500 visitors

Bonus: For people who comment, get to work and get results, each week we’ll include success stories so you’ll get free exposure to over 15,000+ people.

If you have questions, go here to read the faq.

Cheers,
Noah & Tyler

P.S. Remember, leave a comment below with where you want to be in 12 weeks.

My primarily goal in this 12-week course is to double my previous organic traffic count.

To explain “previous” … in July 2015, I hired a supposed SEO expert to help me develop traffic to my site. After 6 months (the agreed upon period), he’d gotten me to about 100 visitors per day according to GA. What I only recently found out was that he manufactured the traffic so it was 99% fake. He’s since disappeared and his bots or whatever are gone so I am now getting 2-5 visitors per day.

My goal is to beat his fake 100/day by 2x, or 200 REAL human visitors per day.

ALREADY HAVE MY FIRST PAYING CUSTOMER!!!

Goal: I will have 12 LONG TERM paying customers in 12 weeks.

I knew I wanted to create my own business for a LONG TIME. I have literally spent the LAST 6 MONTHS, reading books, taking courses and talking to people about creating an online business! All of this work with nothing to show for it….yet.

I never really started anything until I watched Noah’s videos. Especially the ones where he sold beef jerky and made $1000 in 24 hours sold $100.00 worth of custom nintendo discs in 1 hour. I spent way to much time trying to build something without really getting customers or sales FIRST.

I am a REAL ESTATE INVESTOR and have spent $10,000 or more on my real estate/marketing education. I knew I could create something around that. So all I did was reach out to 10 investors and ask them what there big challenges were and what took them the most time. Every single one of them said:

“The marketing and trying to schedule showings!!” Which blew my mind because this was the part I liked and was good at.

Long story short I created a 4 Rental Ads for FREE and everything single one of them had AMAZING results. Everything from renting on their current property in just a few days, being able to rent out OTHER properties because of the great ad response and the best part was every single person of them was able to increase their profits with my help.

Now people are sharing their results, I’m getting referrals and featured in newsletters that reach 100’s of people.

Take aways:
1.) Find your market and ask them DIRECTLY what they’re having trouble with.
2.) Find a way to fix that problem for them
3.) Share the results
4.) Build and grow from there.

My goal is to have a stable number of 100 visits per day in 12 weeks.

Never too late to start something. I’ve been cold-feetted about marketing for years, if not months. Now it’s time to break the ice and take some fresh air and start the journey 🙂

I may not be a natural marketer, but in the business world, I don’t have choice if I want to achieve something. So I’m rolling up sleeves and being ready for the lessons.

All right, just like what my wife said to me: ” You talk too much, but do little. ”

So…here is it.

Let’s stop talking, just do it!

Yo Noah, I posted a goal in week 1 for my personal blog and literally didn’t do anything else for all sorts of awesome reasons and excuses.

Excuses gone. I’m all in and using the Summer of Marketing to do PR for a company event I’m organizing.

Can anyone suggest a good minimum set of attributes to include in a B2B customer profile? (e.g. size of company, industry, location, etc)

Turns out coming up with B2B customer profiles can become quite complicated and would like to keep things simple.

Thanks!

My goals were all over the place. I wanted to increase the AOV of visitors to the taproom, sell out our events, book extra events, find more accounts, etc.

Really, all of this relies on building out our email list and using it properly. So my goal is this:

To increase our email list from 700 to 3000 subscribers while providing at least one post every two weeks to engage our fans.

Right now, we’re getting about two sign ups per day organically (something I just realized) and we haven’t sent out an update since mid-May. There are 90 people on our list who haven’t even heard from us yet!!!

It’s a bummer some of this was overlooked in all the craziness that comes with running a brick and mortar. We’ve done a pretty good job on social media but Facebook and twitter don’t have that same push that an email does.

Looking forward to seeing how it all evolves!

I’m currently getting about 4 leads per week. Is it too far-fetched?

We decided to throw a conference to gain more credibility in our consulting business. It is positioned as a counterpart to all those hype conference, that is, we attempt to question common buzzwords. This year it’s all about the cloud.

We calculated with 120 attendees and 10 sponsors; so my goal is to reach these numbers by the end of August.

We generally manage to sell out our more “mainstream” deals like luxury hotel stays or meals at restaurants at half price, but we struggle with less popular stuff like cooking courses, dance lessons and a recent B2B deal on book keeping.

HI Ryan. Thank you so much for the tips utilizing unBounce and tryCelery. These are new to me. Is there a reason why you did not go with Shoptify or WordPress? Note, I’m not sure if I should launch my own site (b/c confused on which to use), so then I might validate the product first on Ebay… Thanks, Cara

Hi Cara! Thanks for the comment! There are a few reasons why I went with unBounce. 1. I already had an account with them and was familiar with their product. 2. I only have one product at this time so I figured I did not need a full ecommerce site like Shopify. 3. I could use unBounce to A/B test different headlines and price points to see what works, which could be premature since I don’t have much traffic, but the ability is there is needed.

Ebay is always a good way to validate a product and price point. You could also use trycelery only as a single product landing page. There is not a ton of flexibility but you could do a product video, some written content and post the link on your social media channels. WordPress is great but I have not worked a lot with it so I did not want to spend the time going through the learning curve (at least for now).

Good luck and let me know if I can help in any way.

Update!: Goal -Give Away 5000 copies of one of my books. (Long tail goal: Build discoverability and reader loyalty)
Actions: Sent email explaining my project to the 150 subscribers on my list. Urged them to forward the email far and wide. Sent a copy of email to my 6 collaborators so they could mail their lists (their lists are in the thousands!) I will be doing a guest post on a romance site that gets thousands of hits a day in August with one of the biggest names in my genre. Will talk it up there too. Rejected a BookBub ad for now. $290 to advertise a free book for one day only gets me the downloads not the interaction. But it would get me 10K vendor downloads based on their numbers, assuming I could get in, no easy thing. Yeah, this way is harder but ultimately more satisfying.

I’m not even close to being ready to post this comment. The domain that I listed is hardly developed. Yet hitting post comment seems like the right thing to do. Here is both a high level and detailed view of what I want to do. High level: I want to build something that will benefit my daughter. That’s vague and maybe fairly generic as who wouldn’t want to do something that helps their own offspring progress. Now for specifics: I want to build a lifestyle business centered around the concept of self-development through self-defense. 5 clients would be good for this business. I’m a 2nd degree blackbelt in Aikido. Yeah, I’ve got chops ;-). I’m also building a business around the idea that stories build brands, and being mobile builds stories, i.e., http://mobilebrand.tv. For that business, I’m looking for 10 small businesses that want to build micro-podcasts around a service or product that has a direct local impact. Everything I’ve mentioned here is deeply important to me. If you are in a position to refer someone to me, I would be infinitely grateful.

Man, that whole “most people say 2 goals” defined me to the T! I was having a hard time choosing, but ultimately went with the goal that I think will bring me the most tangible results. Sure, 100k visitors to my blog would be nice, so would 10k email subscribers, but since I don’t have any hard data, I don’t know how those will convert into sales or into $$$. So, the goal for the next 90 days is to sell 250 copies of my book The Indie Film Sound Guide – which you can see here if you’re so inclined http://bit.ly/1tUKQbu

My video podcast http://www.designmind.info aims to teach people about good design. It currently gets 1 subscribe a week.
The subscribe usually comes from Google Plus groups.
My goal is to increase this to 1 a day. So in 12 weeks that’s 84.

Here are my plans
1) Publish on more Google Plus group – So far, I have only found one good group, so I have to find more.
2) Publish on Linkedin groups – Not doing this, as all the groups I have tried don’t approve my posts. So I will have to find better groups.
3) Promote on Facebook groups – Although I use Facebook, I am not posting to any groups. So I will have to do this.
4) Use other mediums – At the moment, I am using Google Plus, Twitter, YouTube & Facebook. However, I will look at other mediums. I think Instagram and Pintress would be a good fit as they are visual mediums.

It’s been slow going so far, but planning things out like this is helpful because it gives a clear plan of action, so hopefully I wont wander around any more.

It’s Marketin’ Time! 🙂

This is working already. I haven’t had much time to promote on other groups, but I do spend at least 30 minutes a day. It’s not even been a week, but I gained 6 extra subscribers (I only get 1 a week). I know it’s very small at the moment, but just imagine if I can build on this! 🙂

As I mentioned above my goal is to get 1000 people to my landing page to validate problem I am working on solving. I forgot to mention my site and details on my project. Website/App is not up yet, but it will be up this weekend at http://ebillshare.com/ and the details of problem I am working on ‘to help people ‘Collaborate on Bills’ (not expenses)’.
These could be family bills, or bills you may want to help / get help from family etc. I do not have many specific use cases yet, as I am not sure about extent of the problem.
It works as follows
1. User Adds bill to the app/site, we will verify the bill details.
2. Share it to Collaborate with others
3. We pay the bill once money is in.
I am looking for help on validating the problem, if anyone can think of any user cases from their daily life or variations of the problem they are facing, that would be great help.
I would greatly appreciate any help.

I have a digital magazine for sales professionals that is on iTunes and the Google Play Store. In addition to the monthly subscription, I can add special free or paid issues. I can use this as lead magnets – once someone has the magazine app they see all that is available from their tablet or smartphone. So if they download a special free issue, they see the rest of what is available as well. The space has A LOT of sales experts. Only two digital magazines so far though. If anyone wants to brainstorm on audience development ideas, let me know. I can set up a session to background you more and see what ideas come up. We could round robin the brainstorming time for each participant if interested. I am looking for ideas that attract 10,000 plus downloads.

I’d love to put down a goal of so many sales per month, or some monthly increase in revenue. But I think that’s getting ahead of myself. My theory is that it’s a “long sell” for my biz (rock and roll guitar lessons) and there’s a courtship process that starts with newsletter subscribers.

So, at the end of this thing, I want to get 1,000 new newsletter subscriptions.

1- What problem are you solving? The problem that Transformational Entrepreneurs (coaches, healers, teachers, and leaders) have with technology – they haven’t finished their websites, they can’t start, stay focused on, and complete to-do’s and projects, they don’t know much about technology AND they get frustrated trying to figure things out on their own.

2- Who is the customer for that problem? Transformational Entrepreneurs (coaches, healers, teachers, and leaders)

3- Where are they? Facebook groups, Holistic Chamber of Commerce, local businesses.

4- What 1 specific objective do you want to accomplish in 12 weeks (9/8/12)? I want at least 4 clients per month, which means I’ll be making at least $2,000 in revenue per month.

If the magazine does well, I will outsource a lot of the work on that and then launch my product this fall, and use the magazine as one of the avenues for advertising my products. SO…modified goal for the next 12 weeks: 1,000 subscribers to my magazine by September 22.

There are so many things that I want to accomplish within the next 12 weeks but in order for them to happen, I need to build my list.

I’m making time to learn HTML5/CSS3 and some other web coding languages, as well as rewriting and adding new blog posts and getting my eBook rewritten.

So my MAIN GOAL is to reach 3K email subscribers (currently 50 right now).

I went through the Quant Based Marketing Spreadsheet and the FAQ a few times before I finally got a hang of how to use it. So I have 7 Sources and used a site called Compete to figure out the kind of traffic my sources provide and used very low numbers for the CTR and Conversions and it came out to be over 11K users.

As far as the “Status”, “Confirmed”, and “Confirmed Users”, that will take some time because I have to build up the content on my blog and get out of my comfort zone to reach out to people and communicate with others. Think that’s been a major part of my struggle to get subscribers/clients. Hopefully things will change and I’ll reach my goal. Thanks for creating this course Noah and Tyler. 😀

So in order to hit my goal ($250 by the end of the month), I need a 1% conversion rate off my actual traffic.

Hi Lisette, your plan sounds interesting, have you considered looking utilising platform like this: http://storycartel.com/? I think it’s about $30 per book you want to make a free book download offer, but you also get really useful feedback/reviews in exchange for your free book (which can be good for your sales page copy). It’s something I’m considering for my own ebook launch – recently downloaded some other free ones from here as a test. I’ll be interested to know what else your planning for your launch. Good luck! P.S. I’m not affiliated in any way with the site I mentioned, I just use this myself for downloading free books from already 🙂

Hi Robin! I’ve known about Joe and StoryCartel for a while but I’m not looking strictly for downloads. I could get more through a BookBub ad (Like 10K) I really want engagement. The problem with any of the free listing ads is people download the book and then forget about it. I want people hearing about my book from other readers. Higher value, higher retention, more reviews, more loyalty, email signups, etc. We’ll see how it goes. I also decided not to use the first book in my series since it is already free everywhere. I am using the latest in my series which is only free on my site. Hey, if anyone reads contemporary romance: http://wp.me/P4i8z4-36

Hey Robin! Yes, that is my goal. The plan is to release 3 or 4 e-books every two weeks for the next 12 weeks. Each e-book averages 5000 words. I have hired a gal through odesk who is assisting with the writing. I have researched the niche and written up outlines for what I want and she will complete each e-book. I know my strengths and also my short comings. Outsourcing what I don’t LOVE doing allows me to focus on what I enjoy doing. Hello Guys and Gals, so this answer has been playing on mind over the last few days…. I might be guilty of “Over-Thinking” this one!! At first I thought 1000 new email subscribers would be cool…but as Kajoler is a brand new project I don’t know if this number is reasonable or even what value a new subscriber holds at this stage as I have no conversion data ?? So then I started thinking from a monetary view point – My very rough back-of-napkin figures show that by selling approx 10 places on my workshops at a value of £250.00 per person per month – Working on approx 76% profit gives me a monthly profit of £1,900 – I think this may be a rather conservative figure but again I am being cautious…… However going back to the original question from Noah Kagan !!! What is my number 1 marketing objective for the “Summer of Marketing” I would like to focus on brand awareness and building authority in my niche…. So my question for the group would be.. How would you suggest I go about setting my goals for this ???

Thanks for reading

James

Hi Frank, Nice site by the way! I just wondered if you were looking to split test and optimise your landing page/lead gen page during this time? I couldn’t see any tracking code on the site source (google analytics, crazyegg, clicktail etc). Is CRO (conversion rate optimisation) something you guys are building into the site, or are interested in using? You can use google experments to split your traffic to two versions of your landing page – then you can see which one best generates sign ups during your launch time. It’s free to use if you have a gmail account. I think you’d get a lot of data out that would help your PaaS model (the platform as a service you mentioned). Good luck!

As I work with conversion rate optimization on a daily basis – I know need to grow an email list of say, 1000 names, in order to hit 20% conversion to sales (I’ll be using split testing my sales page to help reach this conversion figure).
I have plans for getting traffic to the email list – which I’ll start putting into action from next week (once the book is finished and ready to sell via Gumroad). But I’m happy to share details, figures and processes etc, if it helps add to the conversation that’ll be happening over the next 12 weeks through your site.
I’m looking forward to how other people are tackling their projects too! Should be hectic, but fun! All the best for now! Good luck to everyone hitting their targets – you’ve got to go for it as there’s nothing to lose. 🙂

I’m documenting the entire process too, so I’ll update you as to how things are going.

Likewise Robin, looking forward to following this journey of yours. I’m especially interested to hear how your experience with Gumroad goes. I read a short e-book which was pretty much a soft non-sell for them (or something) but either way it was effective and they look pretty decent. I’m a big fan of UI/UX so that’s the first thing I noticed about their platform.

I want to get one repeat customer each month – so three total by the end of the 12 weeks. That doesn’t sound like a lot – but if I can build up like this it would be awesome!

Awesome post man. To the point and that spreadsheet is a great start. The fact that about 2 minutes after receiving your email there were already 13 or so people clicking around in the Google Spreadsheet is an incredible indicator that this stuff works.

Goal for the 12 weeks is a more modest 100 email subscribers.

To keep myself accountable, I’ve made a more lengthy post about my intentions. 1 week to learn a programming language is nuts, for sure but it’s the excitement that comes from it that will determine if I want to take it further. You can check it out at http://www.tyson-young.com

I’d love to hear everyones feedback. You can’t sign up to an email newsletter though, there’s currently no functionality for that. Just some details about how to get in contact with me.

Can’t wait to see where people go with this! Already eying off Geraldine Lepere’s French lessons as a gift 🙂

I’m looking forward to seeing how you get on with this Tyson. Just checked out your post, and I particularly liked your opening sentence as it rings true with me too. Plus you mentioned Videocopilot too! (Awesomesauce). I loved learning aftereffects through that site! I’ll blast an email over to say hi later this week. Good luck 🙂

Much appreciated Robin! Yeah, Andrew Kramer is an awesome tutor / creator / after effects comedian etc. The model they use through their site is no doubt outstanding and the content they produce is absolute world class. There’s a lot to be said for educating and helping others – often resulting in that person becoming a trusted thought leader in the field and influencer for positive change. Looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers mate.

OK. Here’s one I prepared earlier…

I want to have 400 subscribers per month. So in 12 weeks that’s 1200 in total or 13 per day.

That’s not where I’ll stop but it’s a good first goal to aim for.

Next!!!

Whoa, so nice to see you here Susan! My goal for this course is so similar to yours… I want to add at least 1300 new subscribers to my email list. Figuring that out was the easy part though. Coming up with a quant based sheet to get there realistically in 12 weeks… siiiiiiigh! I’ll sync up with you on FB and maybe we can be accountability buddies and push each other to rock this thing 🙂
