We had an old course, How to make a $1,000 a month Business (no longer available).
About 1.355% buy the course when they visit the landing page.
Which means that 98.645% leave our website without doing anything. Ouch!
Amnesia marketing is when marketers have to start from the bottom every time they promote a product. Typically caused by a lack of email subscribers and a guaranteed way to reach their audience. This is not a Drake song!
Instead, to avoid amnesia marketing, get your audience’s email addresses.
Then you can contact them about the latest happenings in your business or your new product. No starting from the bottom.
On that same landing page, we added an email pop-up and asked if we could help answer any questions. 15% of visitors left their email address and we were able to reach out to every one.
Here’s the email pop-up we used:
We PERSONALLY email every single person with this:
Here are the results from the first month we did it:
420 sent
122 open
36 replied
20 joined
4.7% joined
That’s for a $300 product * 20 = $6,000 extra dollars each month = $72,000 more buckaroos a year.
All from getting emails.
Fact: If people like you, they want to hear from you!
This week we are setting up your email collecting infrastructure. So that in the upcoming weeks as you are getting more traffic, you have the right tools in place.
Many of you cited a goal of growing your email lists as part of Summer of Marketing. This is especially for you.
1) If you aren’t asking for emails, go sign up for Aweber (what I use) or MailChimp (first 2k email subscribers are totally free).
2) Install the List Builder by Sumo.com (100% free)
3) Make your homepage default to asking for emails, clearly. Here’s a free WordPress plugin to do that.
* Once you've completed 1 through 3 *
A) Leave a comment with the total number of email subscribers you're at right NOW.
B) Then by Friday at 5pm CST, reply to your original comment with your new total of subscribers.
C) One commenter will be featured in next week's email
Love,
Noah & Tyler
P.S. Congrats to Raleigh W. of Jumpshell for leaving our favorite comment last week.
He gets 10,000 points for being ultra-specific about WHAT his customers' problem is, WHO they are, and WHERE they are.
Check out Jumpshell here and if you're looking for a new apartment in Boston, you're welcome 🙂

I'm still building the website. No subscribers. Yet.
Got our first subscriber yesterday. Exciting!
I have 12 subscribers. two of them are me... LOL
I have exactly -0- subscribers 🙁
A sad 115 subscribers. From long time ago. Here I go…
We're at 1357 subscribers to date
Hey Noah!
Thanks for your help! I am using your Sumome. It's awesome:-) I have noticed some room for improvement. Where could I drop a line and tell you more about the issues I spotted?
Thanks again for your awesome plugin!
I am looking forward to hear from you.
2000
I didn't have a email subscription before this class, now I've set one up, offered my website partner's book as a raffle insensitive for those signing up, ad started tweeting and fb-ing it link.
I'm late for this week's assignment, but I've been working (translate "learning" ! ). As I've read the comments of community members, I feel such a sense that there is sooo much to learn. Much of the talk of email lists and subscribers is rather new and/or alien to my world.... I don't generally sign up for things and I don't like "clutter" in my email inbox, so I'm going by faith in Noah and the process !
I signed up for AWeber at the week's suggestion and started by designing a form on their website. Then I got "stuck" because the instructions for placing on one's website did not work. I let it go because more pressing business obligations were waiting. But today, out of the blue, an awesome customer service rep called me just to see how it was going and if I needed help. I hadn't even asked. Together, by phone, she researched and helped make it compatible and work with my site. She worked with me for about an hour 🙂 I now have the email form up on my site's landing page. Wow!
So I'm starting at zero at this moment 🙂 And I have not a clue what I'll say to anyone who may sign up. http://spinemate.net/Spinemate_Backrollers.html
I think I may just offer some discounts or something. But those steps will come next, right? I'm just feeling pleased with this first step. Thanks !!
Almost caught up . Current list - 169.
+29 by the end of the week.
I didn't end up installing the list builder as we only show our popup on certain pages so it would be a lot of work to exclude all the different pages we have for list builder.
I did however start an a/b test for our popup and changed our GA events tracking code to properly track the events of the a/b test. The changes were based off the "7 tips" articles and our variation is doing better so far.
I'm late, but haven't give up. 24 subscribers without the list builder. Installed it yesterday.
the total count continue to 0 🙁 ugh!! that hurts
ok it's time to tweak and shout
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iS0wuN_6wyw&feature=kp
It all starts somewhere mate. Have you asked 10 friends to join your list?
I use some changes on my scripts and i have 2 or 3 subscribers at this week.
I will try another changes today too 🙂
I have a increase on my subscribers but my Sumome plugin has a problem and i lost all of my subscribers.
I send an email to the support to see what is the problem 🙂 And after this i will try again another configurations to increase my subscriptions.
Started the week with 25, added kingsumo list builder on Thursday and added 10 subs from a giveaway (http://theselfemployer.com/giveaways/4-hour-work-week-giveaway-1/?utm_content=bufferf846b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer). Very cool stuff. Fun to see things work so quickly.
Nice work Daren!
Good advice, increased subscriber number by 24 by using list builder! Thanks
Had 0 emails before (other than our paid members). Just installed SumoMe List Builder (a bit delayed but its live now). Excited to see how many emails we get and how it aids in conversion (using similar approach to Noah's example)
Late with this one but I promised myself I would get it done. I'm at 267 subscribers right now and I'm excited about setting this up and the viewers it may bring me!
I have not attempted to gather email addresses or use them in the past. I don't like getting advertising emails and just delete them all, but since this is the emphasis of this week. I'm willing to go along and see where it all may lead.
So, current email list is zero, right now 🙂
25 subscribers right now... wow, feeling a little behind the pack here. Excited to grow this list.
2 email subscribers! 😐
Sadly, I have no subscribers! I'm so busy with agency work that I've neglected my own personal brand. 🙁
Perhaps that shall change soon!
0 email subscribers right now
Still 0 subscribers, but I started yesterday, so I guess it's normal
Start: 15 subscribers
I have 25 subscribers.
1,202 subscribers. Thank you for all your hard work! See you Friday...
4 subscribers so far.
Same number. No change. I'm actually having trouble driving people to my site.
I'm havin 578 Subs right now.
Today I have 1,065 beautiful subscribers!
Awesome stuff Erica!
13 Subscribers
22 subscribers right now
Currently at 242 subscribers. I already use List Builder.
For some reason I thought the deadline was Sunday for leaving a 2nd comment.
I'm not great with WordPress and only just figured out how to do the landing page. I used AppSumo's WordPress Interrupt plugin as I couldn't figure how to get the one recommended by Noah to work.
so... 245 subscribers at the moment
Still the subscribers I have I owe to the list builder plugin which I have been using for at least 2 months now.
Hi, is there a way to add first name to the list builder opt-in form? (Apart from adding my mailchimp code, which works, but makes it look all mailchimp-y and the nice colors disappear.)
START: 1296 subscribers
Nice JR!
275 emails from from purchasers as a required field. Only 100 who voluntarily fill out optional log in info.
6,272 current subscribers
Way to go Luke 🙂
Thanks Noah. Now at 6,390 with a couple of hours to go before the 5pm CST whistle.
As of today, we have 58 subscribers on loopfirst.com
0. Not compatible with Thesis. I'll try and get one created in a similar style.
Today I'm at only 38 subscribers. Installed List Builder though so hopefully that number grows. A lot. 🙂
And like others, I'm also interested in having a first name field added. I'm trying to add a custom submit form from Leadpages but it isn't working properly. All that being said though, great plugin and thanks for offering it to us, Noah!
I'm at 25 subscribers...
0 subscribers.
I have 13 subscribers right now 😛
So far I'm at 21 subscribers without having done anything.. let's see what happens!
3,428 emails subscribers
Currently, I have 35 subscribers on my list. I have the List Builder plugin but it doesn't integrate with GetResponse at the moment. Any plans for that?
1,821 subscribers for http://www.ctrservices.com
I now have 1,823 total subscribers. The List Builder accounted for 1 new subscriber.
174 subscribers at http://en.LetsSeeWhatWorks.com . Just installed the plugin now....
We currently have 56 email adresses in the database
0 subscribers today
Grand total of 12 subscribers so far 🙂
8979 subscribers @ http://www.cinematografico.com.br
I installed the Sumo.Me 2 weeks ago and got 554 new subscribers!
I'm pretty sure the tip 3 will make a lot of difference now, but also trying to create a post with a lot more frequency than before!
Currently 51 on http://quickmail.io
14 Subscribers
We currently have 26 subscribers
Loving the course so far Noah. I'm glad we met through the Lean Product Development course. You are a highly motivating individual and I dig your "just do it" approach.
I currently have 2,391 subscribers, and I plan to increase that to 3,000 by the end of July!
Hi Guys,
right now I already have 170 subscribers and already using list builder. I will perform the change on my first page and let you all know the results (already excited for this one!)
cheers.
Jorge
0 subscribers so far :*.
We have 48 email subscribers!
Give me a woot woot
Hey Noah and Tyler,
You mentioned in the email sent [on July 7th for Summer of Marketing Week 3] that there is a WordPress plugin to make your homepage default for asking for emails, but the link is broken!
GASP!!!
Because I really wanted to click on that link. Think you could drop that in the comments in here? I would be super-duper appreciative if so. I'd love something like that.
p.s. have you ever tried Oscar's taco shop in San Diego? amazing
I wanted to click the non-existent link too. Also, I'd love to eat a late-night taco right now. Mmmmm
Hey Scott! Here's the correct link http://okdork.com/2013/11/13/wordpress-plugin-doubled-conversions/
0 subscribers 🙁
We have 139 subscribers right now using our older methods. Lets see if we can crank it up by Friday. 😉
Just installed List Builder on https://melthaus.com. Looking to increase from today's count of 46 subscribers.
175 subscribers
Currently have 21 subscribers.
146 subscribers currently to my landing page (went from 0 to 146 during the last month 🙂 ).
8 subscribers to my Launch List.
Zero subscribers so far.
170 subscribers. Unfortunately we are using squarespace for the time being. Anyone know how to add a pop-up to squarespace?
8 subscribers total.
Fingers crossed for some more.
One more subscriber after the week. And it's someone I've been talking with over twitter 🙁
I have 7 subscribers
I currently have 66 subscribers on my site. Because I used Gumroad and Udemy to sell my course to multiple audiences, I have access to another 300+ customers for any future updates or releases 😉
63 subscribers at http://www.findby.co (before today and no marketing plan)
3244 Subscribers @ http://www.rocketcases.com
Any chance to have List Builder use a redirect URL on email submission?
We use a custom built popup on our site to give people a 10% discount for their email address. Once they enter their email they get redirected to the discount link.
I'd convert to List Builder if it had this option.
42 subscribers!
2 subscribers at http://www.sherpasride.com
0 subscribers.
Up to 8 subscribers. 11 android downloads and 11 iPhone downloads. So that's 22 out of goal of 1000 with 8 weeks left. Time to switch up and look at effectiveness. Based on chat conference, I'm doing another release of the app on both platforms. Its very alpha now. This should take it into a better, easier to use state.
Currently have 62 people on my email list!
6 subscribers! Yay!
Total Now; 0
Guys,
I hardly dare to write it down: 18 Email Subscribers today :-O
Let's see what we can do abput that in one week!
I have 69 e-mail subscribers as of NOW. Just getting started with my list!
I desperately need traffic to my site (http://www.TravelBeyondExcuse.com). Inserting ways of collecting e-mail addresses does no good if nobody visits. I look forward to working on the traffic-getting aspect over the coming weeks! Meanwhile, I have 4 new subscribers this week for a grand total of 73.
It all starts somewhere. We are setting up your foundation so when we turn on the faucet you can catch the water. Or some other cliche saying but we got you 🙂
I have a grand total of ONE (1) subscriber! Not my mom--my best friend. 😛
Anyway, because I personalize my newsletters, not having a name field built in to the app is pretty detrimental. I hope this is added in the future, especially because all the custom submit forms I've tried embedded from AWeber are completely breaking the site. :/
As of today, 12 subscribers.
Currently have 1,089 subscribers.
Today I have 1,175. From ListBuilder, 72 new subscribers.
today 0 subs
OK, the 3rd step isn't working... I tried to enter the Links and it doesn't anything... take a look at it, Im very interesting in this theme... Im going to subscribe to Aweber and Install the List Builder.... thanks again...
Same, I tried to get the plugin link and it is broken. Phox Charge
11,384 subscribers
Today - 395 subscribers
Today - 407
Hi Noah,
Thank you for the great article!
I have two followup questions: at what point do you show the popup on the landing page? I've visited the page there's no popup that appears :-). Also does a popup like that interfere with terms of Adwords?
Cheers
JD
Thanks so much for the shoutout in this week's lesson! Really appreciate it.
A) Sadly...zero email subscribers right now.
Something I'd love to ask the community here about. I'm nervous about retaining customers with such a short lifecycle — the apartment search process only lasts about 2 weeks and happens every ~2 years. Not sure what kind of offerings/content will be compelling for that audience once they've rented a place. Any thoughts/suggestions wold be hugely appreciated!
Hi Raleigh,
I rent the flat I live in and here are a few content ideas:
- Owner's obligations towards me (should I repair OR is this HIS responsibility?)
- How to negociate a rent
- What's the best time of the year to move out?
- Current opportunities in my area
- Rent or Buy ? Guidelines to decide
- How to take care of your flat to avoid leaving your deposit to the owner
- How to deal with noisy neighbours
- TIps to organize a good Community with your neighbours
- What to do when there's a leak from my neighbour's flat?
- DIY/On budget tips to decorate your flat
- Should you exchange flats with strangers
- Air BnB guidelines
...
There are 100 of topics to cover. 😉
A monthly newsletter and a good blog seem great. And if you provide good content on top of your services, you'll have more chances to be recommended by your customers (they'll FW your emails to friends currently looking for a flat).
Please excuse my English, it's not my mothertongue.
Géraldine
Géraldine, merci bien! (hopefully I presumed correctly that you're French? If not, apologies!)
FANTASTIC suggestions. I could use a thinker like you on Jumpshell's team! Really appreciate your reply.
Best,
Raleigh
I loved Geraldine's ideas--I'll toss one other one into the ring for the monthly newsletter idea: maybe you could get experts to write some content for you. From a personal experience I had last year, some articles from attorneys about the local laws for security deposits and other legal issues surrounding rentals might be useful to renters--so that they know what their responsibilities are to be eligible for the deposit refund as well as the obligation of the landlord to them in terms of how soon they can get their deposit back (e.g., do the landlords have 30 days to give the refund? Should the deposit be placed in an escrow account? etc.). Information like that could be very useful to renters. Love your concept! My husband and I move all the time (several times per year) due to his work so I wish your service was available nationwide!
Thanks so much, Lily! Great ideas as well. I think you've served as the tipping point for me where I'm going to refocus Jumpshell's blog onto people who've ALREADY found an apartment and leave the web app/product to focus on those who are looking. This approach is a really smart way to engage customers beyond their lifecycle as an apartment-seeker.
Really appreciate your thoughts/feedback. Trying our best to make Jumpshell nationwide ASAP!
Geraldine, you're a rock star! Your response to Raleigh was right on target... + a thoughtful and generous thing to do. Kudos. 🙂
I just bought an apartment and not only I would have loved to be helped by the company which built and sold me the apartment with these issues, but I actually expected them to help me - they were the people I called when I wanted to know more about these issues:
- everything about what I need to do to get electricity, water, cable, internet, heating (natural gas) contracts with companies. Basically, how do I go about signing up for utilities, where, who do I call, which website do I visit? Please guide me by the hand.
- I needed a plumber, an electrician, a cleaning person, somebody with the right tools to help me "install" some furniture (fix it on the walls, drill holes etc.). Even if I lived (rent) in this city for about 5 years, I never needed these things and I didn't know anyone. And I didn't want to spend time looking for it online - I'd have to waste a lot of time, compare stuff for services that I only need once probably.
So, you could provide your customers with all of this information and contacts for professionals with reasonable prices and quality work. I'd offer the utilities guide for free and the contacts with the professionals also for free, but from these contacts you can ask for a commission because you're brining them customers.
How about that for a differentiator from your competition? If somebody helped me with all these hassles, I'd make sure I burn his name into my brain in the "looking for new apartment" box and recommend him every time I hear somebody has this problem. I'd also like to brag a little and tell the story of how I know this awesome knows-all-the-right-people-and-helps-you-out guy who helped me save lots of time and frustration and was there for me if I got stuck.
On the long term, I'd want to have access to those professionals, in case I have an issue in my apartment. But I probably wouldn't like to be emailed periodically for that, just know that the resource is there if I need it.
Today I have 2,540 subscribers in my main list.
8200 subscribers on http://www.commeunefrancaise.com/
But I'm having similar issues with people visiting my course page and leaving http://boutiquefrancaise.fr/.
I'll install a webform on this one too today.
Still working on the client profile. 🙂
Installed List Builder yesterday and got 6 subscribers.
At 5PM Paris Time, I have 15 subscribers on my new sales page.
And have hired a contractor to make a page like the one with your plugin (doesn't work with Thesis).
