Noah,
Don't be short sighted about your podcast, you may not have monetized yet but your show is still young. I've been around since ep.14 I think? I'm starting to hear small buisnesses talk about advertising on the Internet instead of the paper....that's an indication of the state of the average small buisness. I think it's worth continuing as radio phases out and podcasting becomes the norm.
Thanks for the shout out, that was supercool
Can I have 10% of an email back? Hit me up for some more perspective - Josh

About 7 months ago, I left my last company—one of the big four car manufacturers—where I worked on autonomous vehicle strategy and planning. After getting through some personal life issues, I started consulting in the space as a freelancer, but I’ve been actively exploring full time opportunities. I get to the end of the recruiting process, and the team will even say they want to make an offer but then something goes wrong. I’m trying to balance waiting to join an ideal team and role against just getting back to work to help my amazing wife pay the bills. Any advice for how to think about this situation and get to a better state of mind?!
Thanks so much for keeping it real!

I recently was laid off from a company I helped build from day one. 5 years ago I agreed to join the two cofounders and help them start a healthcare company that is now $60 million dollar revenue company, but they laid me off yesterday and I have no idea why... I showed loyalty and I agreed to take a pay cut in the beginning I agreed to alter my career path for the good of the company and I was still let go...
I also feel like at the company we threw out titles and everyone got a VP role how do you handle knowing that the title you had at the startup company may not land me another VP job?

Noah,
Thank you for ruining me for all other podcast by setting the bar so high! Love the format, the content and the questions you ask - real people, real questions with real answers. I just finished listening to the John Arrow's podcast. Nuggets like "embrace your discontent" and "for every success(ful business) there were twelve failed ones" are inspiring and encouraging.

And my word for 2018? "Impossible". As in "What's impossible that I am going to do today?" - pushing myself out of my comfort zone and toward my business goals for the new year. Thanks for the encouragement!

How to continue building a revenue-focused online business, understanding that internet is gradually moving to what some people call "trinet" essentially with Google, Facebook, Amazon now taking 70% percent of internet traffic already and it's growing every year. Plus if net neutrality retraction will have the consequences people are scared of, how many potential customers will switch to "essential 5 websites package". It's just that building something on someone else's platform is not really a business and feels like employment.

I'm struggling to sell my app to shopping malls — I sell a people counting application for retail and closing a customer takes months, especially at the end of the year, when companies don't have more budget planned and decisions are made by an external executive board (this is why they take too much time to make a single simple decision)

Hi, Noah...
I am Ravi a listener of your podcast from India....

love the way you do your podcasts and your jovial approach...as you have long experience in online business, marketing, and courses offered by so-called experts in those fields...my question is recently I am exploring different methods of online business so I came across many communities of their own Amazon FBA, Private label courses, Shopify and other Dropship method courses...I was watching many webinars and their claims of income...of course their pitching for courses...I want your opinion about these courses authenticity and what you think of them...obviously, you will be having a deeper understanding and you may already these online gurus...thanks.

Hey Noah, love the show. Your ‘best day ever’ exercise is a game changer. I’m currently a full time student and for the next three months I have a full time job as well. It feels a bit overwhelming at times and I’ve found that I’m running on adrenaline much more than otherwise. If you were in my position (and quitting work and study were not an option) how would you deal with stress, pressure and overwhelm during particularly intense periods of work? Thanks for everything you do. Yohan

Hi Noah,
THX for the podcast and all the interesting inputs you and your friends are sharing - really appreciate it.

I have a very specific topic I try to answer for a long time but till now was not able to find anyone who could help me further. I hope that you or one of your listeners might have a helpful answer.
I spend the past years reading all the GOOD books about Business, Marketing, Leadership, and Management. Starting with “Good to great”, “Built to last”, “Delivering Happiness”, “4 Hour Work Week”, “The Lean Startup”, “Rework”, ... all together 100+ Books how to achieve more in Business.
I have changed the way how I Lead and Manage people as well as projects and see the benefits of this changes in the projects I am working on.
However, most of the companies I have worked for in the past years did not read any of these books. Instead of acting, on the things that need to be done they play politics and I hear way to often the phrase “We have always done it this way and we will not change” or the worst thing I have ever heard “This solution is way too good we can not do it this way” - WTF.
I do not want to complain but try to make a point.
I want to move on but I am tired of explaining and trying to convince the Management board why agile & kanban is better than a waterfall approach or how a Lean/MVP concept will save the company development costs and provide in the long-run a truckload of money. I would like to join a GREAT company instead of a GOOD one - and this leads me to my question:
How to find a “GREAT” company?
And I do not mean GREAT like an APPLE-Fan boy would choose but GREAT like described in the book “Good to Great”.

Sorry for the long post here is a HAPPY TACO

How did you do this with Mint and what’s the strategy for ppl who would benefit most from financial advice?

My company would fire me if I told them the truth. 2. My client I think would cancel our contract if they found out the truth. 3. My boss is making it look like we are (very well I may add.) Now my problem is what to do. It's my reputation at stake being the site manager. I've been trying for over a year to get a new job but have not been able to get anything in this pay range. I apologize in advance for the specificity of these questions..

Is it always best to start small--ie if you have a product idea that will cost $200K to launch, are you setting yourself up for failure?

I'm listening to your podcast on the Fit Fly Shaker (although this business doesn't appear to be active anymore). In this case it sounds like the prototype was small, but what if you need a larger prototype that you want to iterate? How do you drive the cost down on plastic prototypes that require molds?

Throughout today I've been struggling with the fact that this month my company (actually both of them) have not been performing well. And I am not saying that we have just got smaller sales in November. I am saying that for the second month in a row I won't be receiving salary and the salaries of 5 of my employees are just not there physically. That's though.

But it's ok. I just have to figure out how to squeeze the shit out of what I have. Going back to work now. Keep on doing the cool stuff you do 🙂

That's not to say I don't enjoy the interview-style show, but I do miss these types of episodes.

Either way, keep up the great work!

Love the show! Have a question for you.

Over the past few years I’ve struggled with the challenge of having to learn all of the necessary skills to become a successful entrepreneur all at once. I’m working on solving my own problem by creating an online collaborative workspace at WayfaringFounder.com. I see it as fortunate that the majority of features I’d like to be all in one place are already established and validated and functioning. But my biggest challenge is seamlessly integrating all of them into one place. This is most applicable with regards to various blockchain companies that all have their own tokens to use within their own atmosphere. As a non-technical (so far) founder, what is the best way to combine the features/usability of each of them into one user friendly place? Do I try to incorporate something along the lines of ShapeShift and let them all run independently, or is it better to communicate my vision with them directly and try to work with all of them to coordinate an interoperability option between them?

Hope that all makes sense and that you’re not burning out with the show!

... and I always found it inspirational and LOVED your interviews. Hearing you're kinda bored now of that... well.. that makes me very sad. Loved JT's recent one, love your style, love your audio quality (I'm Italian, and listen to it in my car when commuting so for me audio quality is fundamental), and love it generally.

To be honest?

My name Liz Chiandusse (I know it's a hard name: Shan-Do-See). I'm just starting a blog called: http://www.mommydrinkscoffee.com I chose that name because I'm a mom of 3 girls (2 being identical twins) and I need to drink A LOT of coffee...because I'm tired. I'm tired because I work overnight as a professional video editor. The reason I work overnight is - my family. I make more for these hours and I get more time at home with them...but I sacrifice zzzzs. Hence: Mommy Drinks Coffee, but I also drink beer.

My question to you...can I please get a job working for Sumo from home?

[content marketing to a niche when you have a general product]

Your youtube episode with Nick Bare was a HUGE help. I learned a lot, and it really got me thinking.

He took supplements, which are really beneficial to anyone interested in fitness and health. (Which can be seen as a general category)

Then he found his niche with the military, and things blew up from there!

I'm wondering.

If a company is in its early stages, selling a health related product (all natural nootropics), and is doing content marketing.

Would you recommend making content related to health and how the product helps this broader category?

Or would you recommend making content towards the smaller audience that is your niche as a way to differentiate yourself? (In this case, entrepreneurs and business owners)

Thanks for the help Noah!

The Question:

Would you take your time to write a blog post about what was the process of writing or interviewing someone in the beginning and how it looks right now, with all the improvements and failures that have come along the way? I think everyone would appreciate your work even more if you would share the details with some of us who have been listening for a long time and can even offer feedback after seeing the progress.

Question (if you have time): Lately I've been thinking a lot about social media and content creation, and WHY we even bother. Seriously, 99.99% of people do super ordinary or generic content, or they try to be a garyvee clone which is almost worse. I want to do stuff that's different, but WHY does it even matter to me? Is it just an ego thing? I am getting plenty of clients through word of mouth, so that's not factoring for me right now. I feel like it's probably ego driven, or like I'm missing out if I'm not another person creating content. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, but you create a lot of content so interested in hearing your view.

Hey, Noah!

The one challenge I’ve been using is the “can I get a discount” tip. Over the weekend, I was at the movies. I asked for a discount on my popcorn and candy. The guy ended up giving me the candy for free! I use this all the time and it works a good amount, but not always. (And that’s OK, the point is I can take rejection pretty well now!)

I want to work more on my sales skills. How do I do this while working at a job that requires no sales at all? I don’t want to quit my job because it pays well. But I do want to sharpen my sales skills when I’m not at work. Thanks!

What’s up Young Money Jake ––

This is crazy, man. I feel like I am literally reading a note from myself back when I was in college.

Hopefully, Noah will answer this on his podcast. But, being that I was just in school two years ago, I think I can offer some insight that you might find helpful.

Back in college, I remember jumping from business idea to business idea and quitting almost as quickly as I started.

I used to really beat myself up over this. I viewed myself as both a quitter and a failure. And, I started believing that the idea of making money on my own was completely unrealistic.

Today, about a year and a half out of school, I run a creative copywriting agency that works with startups on writing emails and landing pages that people actually want to read.

While I am not some big successful entrepreneur, I make good money working for myself at 23 and am happy with both my life and my business.

I wanted to share with you a few changes in mindset that really helped me go from wanting to start a business to actually starting a business.

1. Stop trying to hit a home run.

Don’t feel like you have to start with a big billion dollar idea. Go out and hit a couple singles, build up some capital and experience… and then you can swing for the fences. You and I are never going to start the next Facebook and that’s okay –– running a billion dollar company is a bit overrated anyways (save for maybe the private jet). Start small and build from there.

2. Go out and make a $1.

I would challenge you to go out today (seriously right now) and figure out a way to make just $1. Find out what people are willing to pay for and then give them what they want.

In college, I would constantly brainstorm business ideas, but I would never actually go out and try to make money. I would spend countless hours building websites and then have nothing to show for them. It wasn’t until I started reaching out to businesses about writing for them that I discovered a great business opportunity –– copywriting.

Find out what people are willing to pay for. Get paid for it. And then, and only then, start building all the other shit –– websites, business cards, etc.

3. Understand that quitting is part of the process.

Please don’t think you are a quitter for quitting. Which I suppose sounds a bit counterintuitive considering that’s kind of the definition of being a quitter.

But, you need to understand that trying and quitting is part of the process. When I was in college, I failed at starting a t-shirt business, and affiliate blog and cleaning company (the last one is a long story).

You’re going to quit. You’re going to fail. It is all part of the process.

Whatever you do, just be sure to learn from your failures. I see a lot of people make the same mistakes two, three and even four times. Quitting and failing is advantageous if you are learning while doing so. If you’re not learning from your mistakes, you might as well strap a T-bone steak to your ass and jump into a piranha ridden Amazonian river.

4. Stop doing what everyone else is doing.

One problem I had in college was constantly trying to copy other businesses –– ‘Oh… affiliate marketing is in now? I better hop on that shit.”

I would listen to all of these podcast interviews with super-successful entrepreneurs and be inspired to start something similar to what they started. Interestingly enough, I would always fail at the business ideas that weren’t actually my own.

Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing. Instead, do something new and different.

5. I stopped making ‘money’ my main priority.

For years, I pushed writing to the side because I was always told that writers were poor. My main concern was making money and so I chased after business ideas that I thought would make me rich.

It wasn’t until I doubled down on something I was actually good at and enjoyed doing that I saw the money start trickling in.

6. Do something you are good at, not passionate about.

I think the whole, “follow your dreams” and “follow your passion” is bullshit. Most guys are pretty passionate about jerking off, but it doesn’t mean they are going to make any money doing it.

Seriously, have you ever heard of anyone that pays for people to sit around all day and jerk themselves to the point of dehydration? Is there some underground startup called ‘Tugger-Labs’ that pay guys $50,000 a year to masturbate.

No.

So, don’t build a business out of a passion… build a business out of something you are good at. If you don’t know what you are good at, ask your friends and your family. Often times, we don’t always realize our strengths (nor weaknesses).

Alright, my hands are starting to cramp so I am going to bounce. But, if you ever need anything you can shoot me an email at cole@honeycopy.com. Like I said, I have been in your shoes and understand your frustrations.

Best of luck, pal.

I have the same thing. Do you think it stems for a fear of failure or imposter syndrome? Mine seems a mix of the two.

What courses or programs would you recommend for someone trying to leave the accounting industry and enter into business consulting?

Hey Noah, it's Martin of TheUniversityBlog - http://theuniversityblog.co.uk/

My 2017 has been awful. Multiple personal family traumas. But many curses have also brought many blessings. I definitely vouch for the story you told!

My question, sir: Can you cast your mind back to when someone made a surprise move that positively affected your own actions in the long-term?

Good luck with all your new directions,
Martin

Every interview is entertaining, educational, and excellent. Thank you for leading us through the "how to" of building a business . You keep me glued to my speakers.

How can I handle sales rejection in person without internalizing it and without losing motivation?

Question - would you rather have your nipples the size of your penis, or your penis the size of your nipple? ?
