I get asked about this a lot so I thought I’d share a story.

When I walked into the first floor on University avenue I wasn’t sure if I was in a frat or a startup. There were cables falling from the ceilings, people running around and I was told to sit on a corner desk.

A long night.

I saw my new boss walk by me and said he’d chat with me after lunch. Cool! Then someone gave me a laptop and I just kinda started playing on the web to be later told I had a meeting with Mark in 30 minutes. This was when the company was ~30 people so still “relatively” small.

I go into the meeting and then Mark comes in. This is my first time meeting him and he says:

“I just fired your boss, welcome to Facebook. You’ll be fine here if you don’t try to sell my company behind my back.”

That was my first day without a boss, meeting Mark and starting to work on the corner of someone elses desk.

And this is when the fun really began…

What was your first day of work like?

Max is probably the business person I respect most in the world. I just saw that a copy of Top Friends was released and in a short amount of time has 600,000 users at 37% daily activity. Screen shot below:

Lawrence Lee is the creator

How do you think Slide feels? Is this aggressive business skills or just crap? Seems like crap to me. Why couldn’t Facebook contacted Slide prior to taking them down and allowing a complete knock-off copy them? I guess this is similar to the Friends-for-Sale vs. Owned! argument as well. Thoughts?

Product:

The Resume App on Facebook lets you import your LinkedIn resume and recommendations to your Facebook resume. For the non-LinkedIn crowd, it also lets you upload your resume in Word format and converts it to html.

Problem:

The app only has 1000 users. Network effects make this exponentially more useful with more users. However, it’s starting to get attention from the press. 2 reporters contacted me for their stories about professionals starting to use Facebook over LinkedIn for their business networking

Questions for you:

1) How do we make this app more viral?

2) Is privacy a concern?

When viewing resumes by network, you can’t actually view the resume unless you add the person as a friend. Should we make all resumes transparent to anyone? Or should we let the user decide on the privacy level? (ie – Only let my friends see my resume; OR let my networks and friends see my resume; OR let anyone see my resume)

3) Should we have a point system?

You’d get points for posting your resume, writing recommendations, or inviting friends. Points let you view more resumes.

Any thoughts, feedback, ideas, suggestions, criticism? Thank you Noah for lending me your blog, and giving me initial feedback when the app launched a couple weeks ago. This post was written by Joe Suh of MyChurch.org.

Nice work Zach and Jacob.

My thoughts on the deal:

I wonder how the guys will change working for someone else now. The guys were adamant about not getting jobs after college so I wonder how long they will stay with Connected Ventures.

Paul Graham is definitely right in that the new economy is to buy talent instead of hire.

IAC was very smart in acquiring maybe not a huge company but a very influential one among young trendsetters.

How long will Facebook hold out for? The economy is very ripe for acquisition.

I value the deal between $30-50 million dollars which is not a bad pay day.

This came out last week but I am still on vacation with my family in Aruba, so while I purchased internet for 1 day I thought I would share. A few months ago we came out with a new search that did everything for everyone. Unfortunately it needed to do a little more and we finally released those parts:

Browse: Now you can find that friend from class or person you saw in your geography. Yes I have no friends and removed people from results for privacy:)

Advanced Search: So you can find exactly what you are looking for.

Classmate Search: Did you want to find all your friends from high school?

We just launched Photo Flyers on Facebook so you can now choose themes and photos when you purchase a Flyer.

New features include:

Themes with the cute icons on the bottom right: Birthday, Romantic, For Sale & Graduation

Ability to use friends profile picture, choose from your albums or upload from your computer

Local advertisers can finally see their Flyer on the live site. Before they just trusted us. Don’t worry I am an Eagle Scout.

And we did not change prices. What more could you want for graduation present? The person who does something cool in my comments section will get some free Flyer credit from me.

Great work: J, K, W, J, N & R. Full names hidden for ninja security purposes.

I went to this great Vietnamese fusion restaurant for business 2 weeks ago and something occurred to me in the bathroom. It is all about the details. In many restaurants fancy or not there is so much emphasis on the menu, atmosphere, employees and other things.

What about the bathroom? It is something that everyone of your guests will use but are you paying attention? I know this is small but is something that people notice and take away with your ‘brand.’

On my second day of Facebook, Mark pointed out that we were missing a space on a non-important page and that it needed to be fixed promptly. I was shocked that the CEO of the company paid so much attention to the details and how important it was for things to look right for the students. This was a very important point for me at the start-up, realizing that he cared about the image of not being sloppy and not having improper things on our site.

I have learned a lot from working at Facebook and pay more attention to even my spelling on Okdork. All of what you do is a reflection of yourself or your business. Are you paying attention?

This may appear “whatevs” but we made some cool tweaks to both features to make them a lot more useful.

1- Photo Uploading: Now you can add all your student group photos or event photos on the site. You can even pull those photos from an album you uploaded to your profile.

2- Wall everywhere: Now you can comment on an event about why you are not coming, what you are bringing or anything you want to talk about.

3- Event invite tool is much sexier and easier to use. As well, events include more details about who is attending, maybe, not attending and so forth.

4- Discsussions: This was revamped from the ground up with meticulous detail to making it as user friendly as possible.

5- General Design Tweaks.

What do you think? Nice work Fuzz and crew…

1- Look you up your friends’ information while you are out on the go. Need their cell, major, etc…?

2- Add friends right as you meet them. Now using their name or email you can add that hottie you met at the bar or that study-buddy you met in class.

3- Receive full messages, pokes, wall-posts and friend requests where ever you go. One of the most requested things is to be notified when you receive messages and now you can.

4- Update your ‘Status’ and see what your friends are up to. Status is a new feature where you can choose to tell your friends what you are up to. You can do this on the website or from your phone. You can see what your friends are doing on the My Friends page (Status Updates) or from their profiles.

5- Check out people’s profiles from your phone. You know his name but do you know anything about them. All the same privacy rules apply.

Naomi and Mark were on the team with me and rocked out hard. They were scared of getting their names in this post but they just asked for it=)
