Grouporation = Group + Collaboration
Background: DevinReams.com is the home of Devin Reams who is a good friend that helped with Community Next & records weekly Yopos podcasts with me. He is a graduating college senior going into the miserable life of accounting;) We have known each other over a year and he is one of the nicest people I have ever met online. Okay, enough flattery.
Problem: Devin Reams is growing up to be a sexy man and is trying to figure out the right “niche” or direction to take his blog. He is have a quarter-blog life crisis and needs help. He did not ask for this help but we will give it anyways.

Question for you: Should he continue to make Wordpress videos, focus on college market, write about Noah daily or what…Check out his site and let’s decide for him.
Please leave a comment and help if you want your site, product or service to be reviewed in the future.

Concentrate on the college market, it’s what you know, you’re current. Add a dash of movie review and a technology post here and there and you’re set.

well, i like his randomness, but if i was going to pick a way for him to go, i would probably tell him to look forward…like accounting with a little techi-ness…he’s only going to be a college student for a little bit longer.
or, just do a review site (he already does reviews - tea, movies, books, and the list goes on) mixed in with some weird nerd rap
noah, stop being a hater, you know deep down inside you have always wanted to be an accountant

I like a blog that mixes in some personal posts along with tech reviews / business talk / etc. Throw in a couple of funny posts ( a la Noah’s Hey Fatty Shirts) and you will be set! The more real you can make it the better!

Everytime I see the name Devin Reams, the word DREAMs comes to my mind. Devin, you have a great blog. Now, keep that dream alive by making it better and better. I wish I could give you advice, but I know jack squat about these kinda things. College students could very well be your niche. But it might be creepy when you are 50 years old and you still blog about students

“Quarter-blog life crisis! Haha. Noah, did you come up with this?
I definitely agree with Shivani and Sri, the College niche is definitely one great area to focus on. What’s hot or not in the College space nowadays? Are there other tech or websites popular among the college students besides Facebook?
However, if you want to branch out to other niches, here are some to consider:
1. You can write just for your fellow accounts. Share your accounting loves and pains with your fellow accounts.
2. Life in Colorado, especially the tech scene. I’m sure there are other interesting tech or web companies besides Photobucket.
3. Is there one tech or web niche that you’re particularly interested in? For example, perhaps you’re into Music-related tech or web sties. You can focus on writing that.
4. Is there one sector or aspect of the biz world that you’re particularly interested in? For example, Noah is focusing on Marketing and Biz Motivation with his blog.
5. Be the ultimate WordPress Evangelist / Blogger. You can talk about the latest features or upgrades, any cool Wordpress-powered blogs you’ve just discovered, and what makes Wordpress better or worse than other blogging tools, etc…
6. Let us, the non-accounts (or accountant hater, like Noah), to get a taste of the Fabulous life of accounts. It might not be as glamorous as i-bankers, but I’m sure there is more to accounting than just debits and credits.
7. Poke fun or expose the real world of accounting—sorta like Valleywag for accounting. Any perks, secrets, gossip in the world of accounting, etc…
Finally, you should definitely try out for American Idol next season. You gotta a very interesting voice—sorta like Johnny Cash.
btw, is there a video on Noah’s karaoke singing?

Thanks, Shivani. I was hoping I can play Simon Cowell for a seceond and critique Noah’s singing. You know–”Noah, I don’t mean to rude, but you sounded abosolutely rubbish”
Is Noah any American Idol material? I hope he is better than his fellow Berkeley alum, William Hung.
