A tad long. I couldn’t get past the second line and, well, then the message is then lost on me, right?

  • [...] Thoughts? Pretty good at expressing the fact that AIDS kills. I’ll be honest, it took me a few seconds to realize it’s a story board of sorts. Try not to focus on a single position. Rather, focus on the positions as pieces of a story. [via] [...]

And by ‘get past’ I mean, I got distracted pondering these figures.. didn’t have any desire to move down the poster. ;-)

It´s a little bit much, at first I thought it is an ad for a new font or something.
So I “scanned” to the end where I noticed several icons that looked the same and that was the moment I noticed that there was a message at all. ;)

    I like the idea.

I wish I still had sex like that. ;)

    I think it’s great.

It has it all: SEX, SIMPLICITY, FUN, NARRATIVE, and a POWERFUL TAKE-AWAY message.

Sex: it’ll always draw people in.

Simplicity: no words — just easy to comprehend figures.

    Fun: amusing variety of positions.

Narrative: as you move from panel to panel, the reader begines to realize that it tells a story.

Powerful takeway: the message is “actions have consequences — take precautions.”

Interesting way to get the message across. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something quite like this, shorter ones, but not like this one.

I am a teacher. This ad will fail.

Here is what kids are going to do.

    1. They will go by in the hall and laugh
    2. They will circle the sex pictures and draw fake anatomy on them
    3. They will label the characters by students names
    4. Parents will be outraged and the admin will be forced to take it down.
    5. Repeat all four steps.

    This advertisement isn’t accurate.

If the two figurines in the poster represented a manogamous couple, their chances of contracting HIV would represent zero.

Sex by itself is not an agent of proliferation for AIDS. Promiscuous sex is, and much more so if it isn’t conventional heterosexual contact.

Furthermore, straight sex is by no means the leading cause by which AIDS spreads. On this front, it PALES in comparison to anal sex and the use of hypodermic needles.

My biggest problem with the whole AIDS education infrastructure is that it preaches methods that have been proven to fail. It also seems to hammer home a mantra-like message that never seems to sink in. It slyly condones certain forms of high-risk behavior while hailing condoms or other contraceptives as a cure-all. In my experience, people that screw around with strangers don’t always use condoms. And for the most part, people that maintain lifelong manogamous relationships rarely if ever get AIDS.

    A little crazy i think.

Message for me reads - ’sex will kill you’.

It’s a linear story which leaves not a whole lot of room for ambiguity. Perhaps it’s ’sex in multiple positions will kill you’, it will ‘certainly leave you alone and sick’.

Perhaps it was the furniture that did it?

Not only is this ad is terribly Anti-Sex, but the message is also incredibly ambiguous to the treatment.

To Mike W’s point, not only does it not illustrate any high-risk situations for AIDS, it may in fact illustrate the *lowest-risk* situation around for the audience it is targeting: monogamous sex.

It doesn’t educate, there’s no action being promoted — not even “Get Tested” — and the only thing it clarifies is that AIDS still exists. At “best” a few kids will get scared out of having sex. *Scared.* Yikes.

But for those that aren’t, this is a great manual! (Cut of rows 1-4, Fold into pocket)

You guys are too literal. Think of it as “each different position represents a different partner”. This poster is aimed at college students, who are known for “hooking up” with different people as a lifestyle. They’ll get it.

I guess I saw it as one person having tons of sex and the aftermath of that. This is a great advertisement in my opinion as I have remembered it and thought of it multiple times since seeing it.
