Sunday Thought: Masturbating to Business Cards
I was going through a pile of old business cards today and realized a few things:

1) I did not follow up with these people right after meeting them (< 1 day)
2) I did not spend enough time developing a relationship or at least getting to know them
3) Emailing them now about help, deals, relationship or anything is nearly equivalent to cold calling them. They don't remember me.
Bottomline: Getting a business card and not getting a relationship is like masturbating to Kira Kneightly and telling your friends you had sex with her.

Reminds me that I need to get my cards printed. I’m a bit unorthodox in that I build relationships then return a few weeks later and say “hey, I don’t think I gave you my card”.

Ugh. I have a terrible habit of not following up. What’s even worse is that sometimes I’ll initiate contact, get a reponse, and then I’ll leave them hangin’. How retarded is that? I need a good smack or two.
Noah, good to see that you’re getting your sense of humor back. I didn’t realize you’d lost it.

Building relationships is key. Hence your relationship manager/CRM for friends is key. What you need is a way after scheduling an event to be asked who you met and have a reminder to email them a day after, a week later and then a month later. Cementing relationships are like learning facts, if u want someone to remember you and stay in your longterm memory you gotta remind them the day after, a week after and then ongoing in that month. I often meet for lunch in the weeks after and cement the rapport built at the event.

It is spelled Knightley, but close enough. Point taken, and a fine way to put it at that.
