Facebook launches Social Timeline

Facebook launched Social Timeline today. All social networks have friends and connections but we said shit how do you know actually these people? So we created Friend Details where you can label how you know them. A lot of people asked why did we do this but now we have the answer for you. Social Timeline is one amazing feature where you can graphically see a visual representation of your friendships.

Facebook Social Timeline

After you add your Friend Details you can now see who all your co-workers were in 1995 or all your past relationships. So go update all your friend details and enjoy the Social Timeline. Feedback is always welcomed.

It’s an okay feature, I don’t see it being the most popular thing. However it does REALLY tie in with the idea of a Face Book.

I think the real problem is that only those most horribly addicted to the book of faces create detailed relationships. at least that’s been my experience. although i’d be interested to know about the usage patterns at schools other than mine (a small liberal arts school, and all that that entails)

    Facebook’s Social Timeline

“Meh.â€?But seriously, if I had known this was coming I would have spent the extra 2 seconds (times 300 friends) to go through and append the ‘date’ that I met everyone. Now all that time spent has been almost for no reason. On the good side, I w…

David’s point echos my sentiment: too much energy is required to update each friend individually. How about we update our own profiles (occupations, classes, activities and when they occured) and then let facebook do the dirty work of making those connections with people. I’m not going back through 300+ people to add years and stuff.

When will you have the ability for college grads whose e-mail address was deleted by the university after they graduated to have the opportunity to sign up for facebook? I graduated in 2004 and my university removes our school e-mail address after we graduate!

You better be careful Noah. It almost looks like you are selling out to Facebook. I know this is your new job, but it does look like one big advertisement. I am sure Facebook is trying very hard to compete with Myspace, but I do not think that will happen when you restrict the users.

I was not all that impressed with this timeline feature. I thought it was good for a couple of minutes and then I got bored with it. That is the same thing that happened with the pulse feature with me.

I just got back from Tahoe so sorry for not responding. I don’t mean for my blog to become a Facebook advertisement but I like writing about stuff related to college and yopo (young professional) markets. This is related and luckily I get to work at Facebook as well:)

If you are missing an email address from your school please email me.

Devin, I totally agree with your point of having Facebook figure out the dates but it is much harder than expected. I think taking important dates and presenting it there is a great idea. We will be updating this feature in the future.

Another problem with the social timeline is the time brackets it’s set up into (Fall, Spring, Summer, Winter).

What about high school classes, which go from September and end in May? It’s much too troublesome to enter in the same class three times just for one year-long class.

Perhaps more reasonable time brackets would be by semester and then the holidays in between?

    11th Grade 1st Semester
    Winter Holiday
    2nd Semester
    Summer Holiday, etc. etc.
