What DO college students do with their free time?

I sat down at Sproul Plaza, opened my agenda and looked at the mess of work I had to do. Three papers, and two midterms and I decided that it’d be interesting to see what other college students do on their free time (because obviously they aren’t doing anything prodcutive aka studying). I walked along Sproul and asked exactly 25 students these exact questions.

1. How many hours a day do you spend online not doing school work?
2. Do you have an ipod?
3. If not then why?
4. If yes then how many hours did you listen to it?
5. Do you own a tv?
6. If no then why?
7. If yes then how many hours a day do you watch it?
8. What shows do you watch regularly and why?
9. How many hours are you “productive”?
10. How many hours a day do you sleep?

On average each student spent 5 hours of their time each day online.
The minimum spent was 1/2 an hour and the maximum spent was 8 hours.

Out of the 25 students, 20 of them had ipods; 80%
The 5 who did not have ipods did not have them because they either had other mp3 playing devices (booooo) or they thought ipods were too expensive.
On average each student listened to their ipod for 2 hours a day.
The minimum was 15 minutes adn the max was 3.5 hours.

Out of the 25 students surveyed, 11 of them owned televisions.
The reasons for not owning the televisions were: live in dorms and it’s not convenient, too expensive, too big of a distraction.
Those who watched it watch an average of 2 hours of television.
Minimum of 1/2 an hour and maximum of 4 hours.

The shows watched most regularly were :
News: “because I like to know what’s going on”
The OC: “because Adam Brody is so hot”
Laguna Beach: “because they make me angry”
Family Guy: “because I love Stewie”
Futurama: “because the Simpsons are getting old and redundant”

On average the students were “productive” for 3 hours.
Minimum of 1 hour (raises hand) and maximum of 7 hours (lame nerds).

On average the students slept 6 hours a day.
Minimum of 2 hours and maximum of 10 hours.

Thus far in the past 4 days I’ve slept a total of 15 hours. I’m so loving the college life.

So that’s it for now on what college students actually do with their free time.
