Your walkman played CDs? My walkman (my first walkman) played tapes, it was great. The next two played CDs(both the same model). The difference between the iPod and other players is that iTunes is actualy really good, I had a minidisc player and the software for it was crap, the player was fantastic, by far the best sound on any portable player I have had. But my 1st gen Nano is just so much smaller and cooler, it's just so tiny! Basicly any technical inferiorities (poor battery life compared to other players, not being able to play video, higher price) is made up for in design and interface. Also easily managed podcasts are great.

Great, I had a nice long comment written and hit backspace outside the comment box by accident - lost it all. :(

The gist was that the iPod's have become popular for two reasons: best all around players (for now), and the design is at least slightly more polished (not literally) than any other player out there, combined with good marketing. A prime example was the Shuffle - there were a few players that were cheaper, better (with screens and more features), and still reasonably cool looking, but the Shuffle had the classic Apple design - clean, slick, and modern. Apple was able to slip MP3 Players out of the geek realm and into mainstream with the design - people love to show off their iPods!

something bout an iPod just puts it beyond other mp3 players I guess...

cuz there was a whole bunch of 'em before, and plenty more before iPod.. but somehow an iPod is more popular? (well I guess it had more storage initially)

weird.

I, for one, dont have one :P But I hardly listen to music, so *shrug*
